FLINT (CCN) — Flint's Trey McKenney came into this season as the odds on favorite to become Mr. Basketball, so it was a surprise to few when it was announced Monday (March 10, 2025) at the offices of the Detroit Free Press that he won the most coveted individual prize in high school basketball.
He led Orchard Lake St. Mary to the state finals in Division 1 two years ago as a sophomore, then scored 32 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field with 10 rebounds to lead his team to a 62-53 victory over North Farmington in last year's state championship game.
That double-double effort on Michigan's biggest stage at the Breslin Center in East Lansing last spring in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division 1 finals, cemented McKenney as one of the top prep prospects in the entire USA's 2025 class.
He picked the University of Michigan to play collegiately next season before his final high school campaign began.
St. Mary's is a prep school where McKenney chose to take his talents instead of playing locally.
He's well known to many around these parts, however, as the grandson of the late Woodrow Stanley — a former Flint City Councilman, Flint City Council President, Flint Mayor, County Commissioner, County board chairman and State Legislator.
His grandmother, Rita Stanley, is well known as the long-time leader of Flint's Big Brothers Big Sisters organization until retiring in 2022.
The consensus five-star recruit and McDonald's All-American selection guard is averaging 22.9 points per game this season while grabbing an average of 10.5 rebounds per contest with 3.1 assists per game.
Orchard Lake St. Mary finished behind 7-0 Detroit U of D Jesuit and 6-1 Birmingham Brother Rice in the tough Detroit Catholic League this winter where the Eaglets were 5-2. They are 19-6 overall and headed to the Division 1 MHSAA quarterfinals tonight at 5:30 pm against Macomb L'Anse Creuse North at the University of Detroit Mercy.
They've won 10 straight since a losing 66-64 barnburner at Birmingham Brother Rice.
They beat Grand Blanc (72-41) and Waterford Mott (54-37) in regional round breezes after winning big in the districts over White Lake Lakeland (75-22) and West Bloomfield (75-22).
Three of Orchard Lake St. Mary's other losses were to out-of-state powers The Villages Charter School of Florida, Indianapolis Cathedral and IMG Academy of Florida. McKenney scored 19 points in a 68-65 loss in Indiana and he had an impressive 37-point performance against Florida IMG Academy in a battle at Oakland University in Rochester.
McKenney was hurt against Florida IMG Academy and missed five games while watching his teammates go 3-2 against tough competition.
“We have such a deep team, I think the next man is always going to be ready whenever somebody is hurt or whenever somebody is in foul trouble,” McKenney said. “Everybody was ready and everybody took the challenge on. I was happy to see the game from a different aspect.”
He returned Feb. 8 in a Catholic High School League Bishop quarterfinal, then helped lead the Eaglets past Brother Rice in a semifinal game and then to another Catholic League title with a 58-57 barnburner victory over Detroit U-D Jesuit in the Feb. 14 final to regain the No. 1 state ranking.
Besides the loss to Brother Rice and a 63-54 league loss to Jesuit, St. Mary's only otherloss to a MHSAA school was 69-68 to East Lansing in the Gottagetit Hoop Classic in East Kentwood.
Only East Lansing is still alive in March Madness.
Jesuit lost 70-62 to Wayne Memorial in the Regional finals after nipping Brother Rice 60-58 in its first regional game last week.
East Lansing won big over Kalamazoo Central in its regional title game and now goes to Mason to face Ann Arbor Huron in the Division 1 quarterfinals tonight.
Ann Arbor Huron, champions of the Southeastern Conference-Red, is 21-4 overall and ranked No. 11 in Division 1. Capital Area Activities Conference-Blue champion East Lansing is ranked No. 2 and stands 25-1 with its only loss coming early in the season to Muskegon 69-68 in overtime in the D Zone Invitational at Clarkston.
OK Conference-Green champion Muskegon is also out in the Division 1 MHSAA tournament after losing a regional opener game last week to OK Conference-Red champion Rockford which took a 22-2 record into the contest.
Rockford then lost in the regional championship game to Flint Carman-Ainsworth. It was a 64-60 thriller in overtime.
Flint C-A now goes to the quarterfinals tonight at Dewitt against Byron Center. The other quarterfinals match-up in Division 1 features Wayne Memorial against Detroit Martin Luther King at the University of Detroit Mercy.
Martin Luther King is 21-5 overall, Wayne Memorial is 23-3 after winning the Kensington Lakes Activities Association-East with a 14-0 record, Byron Center is 20-6 and Carman-Ainsworth is 21-5 overall but on a nine-game run that included knocking Flint Powers Catholic out of a three-way tie for the Saginaw Valley League championship by beating the Chargers in a triple overtime thriller.
McKenney now needs 70 points to reach 2,00 points for his career.
He's already the all-time leading scorer in St. Mary's school history.
His four-year career numbers there are 22.9 points per game while averaging 10.4 rebounds per game and passing out an average of 3.5 assists.
He became only the fourth Flint player to ever win Mr. Basketball since the award began in 1981. The others were Monte Morris of Flint Beecher in 2013, Kelvin Tolbert of Flint Northwestern in 2001 and Glenn Rice of Flint Northwestern in 1985.
The only other players from the Metro Flint regional area to win Mr. Basketball were Foster Loyer of Clarkston in 2018 and Dane Fife of Clarkston in 1998.
The Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) began a 10-year project in 2010 to honor players from other time periods before the Mr. Basketball award was created in 1981.
Four other local players were honored as honorary Mr. Basketball winners during their senior seasons. They included Tim McCormick of Clarkston for 1980, Trent Tucker of Flint Northwestern in 1978, Ralph Gilbert of Flint Northern in 1940 and Lincoln Dodson Truss of Flint Northern in 1933.

AUBURN HILLS (CCN) — A 33-year-old Vassar man was identified on Monday (March 10, 2025) as the shooter in Friday's murder-suicide at an Auburn Hills hotel.
Marcus Taylor shot and killed Jackie Jo Torrez of Saginaw and then killed himself, according to a news release by Auburn Hills Police Chief Scott McGraw.
A 3-year-old girl was found unharmed in the hotel room by police officers who were in the hallway approaching there when hearing gun shots after a 911 call about a possible domestic abuse case. Taylor was 33.
Chief McGraw reported that the child witnessed the shooting, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that unfolded in our community Friday night, resulting in the loss of life in the homicide-suicide incident. Our hearts go out to the victim and her family during this incredibly difficult time. Domestic violence is a serious issue that affects individuals and families in many communities. We urge anyone experiencing violence or abuse to reach out for help and support. There are resources available for victims of domestic violence, and no one should feel they have to face these challenges alone.”
The incident took place inside the Holiday Inn Express at 3990 Baldwin Road, near the Great Lakes Crossing Outlets mall.
