FLINT (CCN) — Tonight at 6 o'clock will be a major meeting for the Swartz Creek Board of Education. The future of Morrish Elementary's fate is on the agenda.

Residents opposing a proposed advanced manufacturing plant in Mundy Township have been discussing the topic for months because the school sits right smack in the middle of a 1,388-acre site were $259 million in state tax dollars have gone to make it happen.

Outgoing Superintendent Rod Hetherington admitted at a recent meeting that the district has had offers for the school building from the Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance which is an arm of the Flint-based non-profit organization known as the Flint & Genesee Group Inc.

The state funding was given last year by the state legislature and signed into the budget by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

It's also on the agenda for the board to approve Deputy Superintendent Jim Kitchen as the interim Superintendent. Rod Hetherington resigned the district's top job on Friday (June 20, 2025) after the Zeeland Board of Education voted to hire him as Superintendent there a night earlier.

SWARTZ CREEK (CCN) — Rod Hetherington has issued a resignation letter to the community he grew up in after being chosen to become the new Superintendent of the Zeeland school district.

Metro Flint News/Talk Radio's Morning Gazette Radio Show first reported earlier this month that the Swartz Creek school district's leader had applied for Zeeland position, then reported exclusively that he was one of two finalists before reporting last week that he had been selected.

Hetherington has been Superintendent since July of 2022 when he was selected for the top job from 22 applicants after Benjamin Mainka left the district to become the superintendent of the Novi school district.

Hetherton had previously served as the district's Deputy Superintendent after working in roles as the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and as a building principal and assistant principal.

He was a 1991 graduate of Swartz Creek High School.

Hetherington worked as a classroom teacher in the Flushing and Fenton districts before landing a job as an administrator at Swartz Creek.

He will begin his new role on July 7 in Zeeland.

A salary was not immediately determined when Zeeland's school board voted unanimously on Thursday (June 19, 2025) to hire Hetherington. The position was advertised with a pay range of $200,000 to $250,000. Hetherington's salary at Swartz Creek was $195,389, according to a web site that tracks school district salaries known as govsalaries.com.

In a farewell letter, Hetherington told district residents:  "After 21 years of service to Swartz Creek Community Schools, I have accepted the Superintendent position at Zeeland Public Schools. This decision is truly bittersweet. Swartz Creek is my hometown and has been my place of leadership, from the principal of Morrish Elementary to assistant superintendent to superintendent. It has been a true privilege to serve the students, staff, and families of this district. Together, we’ve accomplished great things. We’ve supported students, passed bonds, expanded services, and faced significant challenges with heart and determination. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built and confident in the outstanding leadership team that’s in place to continue that work with excellence. Thank you for your trust, support, and partnership over the years. Though I look forward to this next chapter, Swartz Creek will always be home."
