State Rep Cynthia Neeley calls casket stunt act of terrorism by national community activist

FLINT (CCN) — MLive posted a story online Thursday (May 8, 2025) quoting a Flint state representative as saying a national community activist committed an act of terrorism when staging a protest in front of her home with a casket earlier in the week.

Rep. Neeley said she was "shaken to the core" by the incident where a few dozen protestors gathered in front of her home on Monday after marching a casket there from the sidewalk in front of Flint City Hall. She has lived there for 33 years with husband Sheldon Neeley who is Mayor of Flint.

Rep. Neeley’s statement published online by MLive described the protest as political violence. She said it was done “to terrorize my family in the name of politics or personal gain.”

She added to MLive, “These tactics have no place in our community. I am a public servant. I serve as a state representative, but more importantly, I am a mother, a friend, and a neighbor who loves this city deeply. My husband ... is committed to serving Flint with integrity. No disagreement, no debate, justifies what happened at our home. To those who sent this man, and to those who may condone such actions: I urge you to reflect. This is not leadership. This is not democracy. This is dangerous. I will continue to serve. I will continue to speak out. And I will continue to believe in the better angels of our community. Because we know love, commitment, and faith (are) stronger than fear.”

Rep. Neeley and her husband did not respond to our requests for a comment.

The Texas activist, Jedidiah Brown, said in a video after being released Thursday from the Genesee County Jail that the target of the protest was Mayor Neeley. Brown hosts a YouTube video podcast that attracts thousands of viewers since his work in Dolton, Illinois led to an FBI investigation for public corruption.

Brown said he was joined at the Neeley home by about 35 citizens of Flint. He said all were peaceful and on the public sidewalk as video of the event confirmed when examined by The Daily Gazette.

The Daily Gazette confirmed that Brown had the entire march filmed and he indeed stated at the start that the casket "for the record, is not to intimidate or to incite. It’s specifically to inspire ... We’re cancelling the funeral of Flint.”

Brown said his right to protest is guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.

Brown was arrested about 20 minutes after Tuesday's election results were announced at about 10:15 pm by Metro Flint News/Talk Radio. Brown backed Beverly Biggs-Leavy in the primary race to fill the vacant 3rd Ward seat on the Flint City Council. Biggs-Leavy and A.C. Dumas won with 165 votes each to move on to the August ballot.

They defeated LaShawn Johnson who was backed by Mayor Neeley. Johnson received 162 votes and plans to ask for a recount.

(See Related Stories Below)

The arrest of Brown was made by Flint police officers on Pierson Road, near the I-75 exit, in Mt. Morris Township.

Flint's 6th Ward City Councilwoman Tonya Burns and 8th Ward Councilman Dennis Pfeiffer showed up at the scene to ask why Brown was being arrested.

Video by Burns shows one officer explaining that he was "deputized to arrest people anywhere in the county."

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson has not yet responded to our request for a comment about the Brown case.

Brown was detained at the jail Tuesday night and Wednesday night until being released on Thursday afternoon.

Supporters gathered outside the jail from about noon on Wednesday, including the podcast company known as 810NewsGroupMedia that filmed live at times.

Brown immediately announced after being released that he plans to sue the city over the arrest.

He already filed a federal lawsuit last week when escorted out of a Flint City Council meeting by Flint Police Chief Terrence Green, saying he was "trespassed" from entering the building.

Brown revealed on a Thursday night video that attracted more than 1,000 comments how terms of his release bar him from attending council meetings and he further announced that he was also served with a personal protection order to stay away Pastor Chris Martin of Grand Blanc who has a Flint church that Brown attended last Sunday. Brown said it was "ordered by a judge ex-parte without me being present."

Rep. Neeley said Brown and the protesters with him went to her home in a "terrifying act that no family should ever have to endure. A man, a political terrorist from out of state, dragged a casket to my front door and shouted vile and profane things about my husband and my family.

As a child of God, mother, and wife, I was shaken to my core. I perceived this not just as a threat to my safety, but a direct threat to the lives of my children and loved ones.”

Although video by Brown at Tuesday's arrest scene show an officer telling him he was "under arrest for disturbing the peace" — court records indicate he's charged with a Class A misdemeanor for "disorderly conduct and disorderly persons" which carries up to 93 days in jail.

VATICAN CITY (CCN) — An American has been selected as Pope for the first times in history.

Robert Prevost was elected Thursday, taking the name Leo XIV.

The 69-year-old is the first American to ever lead the Catholic Church.

White smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel on Thursday — signaling that the Roman Catholic Church’s 133 eligible cardinals had come to a two-thirds majority vote on who the next pope should be. The bells of St. Peter’s Basilica chimed, the crowd in St. Peter’s Square waved flags from different continents and chants could be heard: “Viva il Papa!” Long live the pope.

Cheers erupted as he stepped on the balcony overlooking St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican to address the crowd that had gathered along with 1.4 billion Catholics watching around the world.

Prevost has not endorsed nor opposed a document that would bless same-sex unions in the Catholic Church and his exact positions on key issues are not yet known.

He indicated, however, in Thursday's address that Catholics can expect "continuity" with his predecessor, Pope Francis, who challenged long-time Catholic Church norms on many controversial issues.

Pope Francis made substantial strides in pushing the church toward including LGBTQ+ people despite opposition from most American bishops.

The Catholic Church is at a crossroads with many wondering whether new leadership would bring more progressive views at the top as Pope Francis delivered. Thursday's statement seemed to signal more of the same direction as Prevost is pastorally aligned with Pope Francis who named him as a cardinal in 2023. Most notably, Pope Francis also asked Prevost to preside over one the most revolutionary reforms ever in the Catholic Church when adding three women to the voting bloc that decides which bishop nominations are greenlit and sent to the Pope.

Critics on the conservative side noted how Prevost has been accused of mishandling sex abuse cases in Peru and in Chicago although his own dioceses maintained that the accusations were handled according to Catholic Church policy.

The new papacy comes at a time of tension between the Vatican and the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. A few months before he died, Pope Francis penned a letter to American bishops condemning the approach to immigration. Pope Francis also took direct aim at Vice President JD Vance’s attempts to use his Catholic faith to justify the new administration’s deportation policies. Prevost, now to be known as Pope Leo XIV, agreed with Pope Francis in a social media post, saying, “JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others.”

FLINT (CCN) — A non-profit organization known as Investigate N Advocate released a terse statement critical of WJRT ABC 12 TV on Thursday (May 8, 2025) after its leader was jailed here.

The reaction was reported on Metro Flint News/Talk Radio's  8 am program The Morning Gazette Radio Show just minutes after it was released by the organization,

The press release came as Jedidiah Brown, a national advocate from Texas,  remained in jail for a third day after a disturbing the peace arrest about 20 minutes after election results were released on Tuesday.

The press release said, "We are outraged by the misleading and irresponsible reporting by ABC 12 news regarding the protest efforts of Jedidiah Brown and the citizens of the City is the Flint. Your portrayal of the symbolic use of a casket as a threat is not only false but dangerously irresponsible. The casket was never intended as a threat — it was a powerful symbol to represent the depth of suffering and the burdens residents have carried for far too long.  As Mr. Brown clearly stated, the funeral is canceled signifying that hope and  change are alive and well. Your failure to report this truth accurately speaks volumes. We are fully aware of ABC 12's cozy relationship with Mayor Neeley but your duty is not to serve political interest — it is to serve the public with factual and balanced journalism. You have a responsibility to report the news with integrity, not to twist narratives to fit in agenda. We will not allow you to gaslight the people of Flint. We will not remain silent while you manipulate public perception. We are committed to exposing the truth and bringing national awareness to how ABC 12 distorts reality to protect power."

The statement came as Brown 0was still lodged at the Genesee County Jail Thursday morning while a protest by his supporters gained picket signs from angry residents who want him released.

Brown has twice been arrested by Flint police since coming to Flint last month.

He was escorted out of a Flint City Council meeting last week by Flint Police Chief Terrence Green and said he was "trespassed" from Flint City Hall. Brown filed a federal lawsuit against the City of Flint two days later.

Brown was arrested by Flint Police Department officers in Mt. Morris Township Tuesday about 20 minutes after election results were reported on Metro Flint News/Talk Radio, near the I-75 Exit on Pierson Road. (See related story above and other stories at right if you are reading on a laptop or PC, or scroll down if you are reading on a mobile device)

Brown's vehicle was towed despite having a second individual from Investigate N Advocate inside the vehicle to drive it. Numerous police officers, police chiefs and former police chiefs told CCN that arrangements to have someone come to the scene to drive away a vehicle are generally allowed when police tow vehicles. They said it's unusual to arrest anyone for disturbing the peace a day after the incident, especially pulling someone over on a busy road late at night to create a dangerous situation.

Two Flint City Council members (8th Ward Councilman Dennis Pfeiffer and 6th Ward Councilwoman Tonya Burns) appeared at the scene of the arrest to question why Brown was being arrested.

FLINT (CCN) — Two women who are political opponents on the Flint City Council issued harsh social media jabs at each other Wednesday (April 16, 2025) as the in-fighting continues on the divided council.

Flint's 6th Ward Councilwoman Tonya Burns took exception to a post on Facebook by 2nd Ward Councilwoman Dr. LaDell Lewis after an event staged on Monday at Flint City Hall by a national activist.

Councilwoman Burns, tied with 5th Ward Councilwoman Jerry Winfrey-Carter as the longest-serving members on the council, lashed out on social media against Councilwoman Dr. Lewis after the first-term elected official made a Facebook post angry about Burns after Burns, Winfrey-Carter and two of their colleagues failed to show up for a city council meeting on Monday.

Dr. Lewis wrote in somewhat illiterate fashion, "Where your council person at? Where your council person at? That’s what the 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th ward residents should be asking. Unfortunately council members enjoyed line dancing in council chambers with the residents that were bussed in from Chicago at the request of Tonya Burns to disrupt our council meeting instead of fulfilling their elected duties. When it was time to handle council business and have a public hearing for a multi million dollar project development, they chose to break quorum. I hope these businesses don’t take their business elsewhere because they feel Flint is not open for business. This not the government our city deserves, or is it?"

Councilwoman Burns noted there was never a quorum to break and said she had nothing to do with national advocate Jedidah Brown of Texas bringing a bus load of residents here from Dalton, Illinois to support his campaign to uncover public corruption in the City of Flint. Brown heads a YouTube podcast known as Investigate & Advocate which gained thousands of viewers when he brought national attention to widespread corruption in Dalton where he helped uncover and spotlight corruption, leading to indictments.

Burns and three of her colleagues who did not attend Monday's scheduled council meeting have been vocal critics of Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley, and they have called for public corruption investigations of the Mayor, former City Council President Dr. Lewis and their supporters on the council who include 1st Ward Councilman Leon El Ah Mean, 4th Ward Councilwoman Judy Priestly and 7th Ward Councilwoman Candice Mushott. All have denied the allegations from their colleagues, saying former City Attorney William Kim approved them giving money to non-profits they control, calling it legal.

The council has deadlocked on hundreds of votes since January over electing a new President to replace Dr. Lewis in 2025. They've also deadlocked on hundreds of votes over naming a replacement for former 3rd Ward Councilman Quincy Murphy who passed away in late September. The City Charter required a replacement to be named within 30 days but it has not happened more than 6 and one half months later.

Burns responded to Dr. Lewis on her Facebook page, writing, "A very disheartening and dishonest post was made by Councilmember Ladel Lewis about Monday’s City Council meeting. The fact is that four members were not coming back to the council meeting as four of them were not there at roll call ( video of roll call is below). Some members were upset that people from Illinois had come to Flint to show their solidarity. At no time were there any threats of violence or disrespect. The Flint Police Dept had prepared for their arrival and it went without any incidents which was great. There was an hour of time between the meetings of just dead time while waiting for the next meeting to occur at 5:30 PM. It’s unfortunate that because people were bonding, jovial, and collaborating about the similarities in how the municipalities functioned and that their residents banded together to make necessary changes in their leadership by removing Super Mayor Tiffany Henyard. The residents from the great State of Illinois were nothing more than respectful, kind and encouraging. The residents of Dolton, Thorton and surrounding areas showed respect to everyone in our council chambers especially to the Flint Police and City Clerk. Please note that I did not plan or participate in the planning of this excursion to Flint but I definitely welcomed the bus load of Illinois residents and greeted them with delight in my heart."

Brown said on his YouTube video podcast Wednesday night that he has spent $18,000 so far on his work in Flint, and the advocate expressed disappointment that so few Flint residents showed up Monday at Flint City Hall. He said he will give Flint residents two weeks to come together or he will take his investigative work elsewhere to help another community.

Brown is from Texas and has visited many states to fight public corruption. He was also especially outspoken about criticism leveled at him by a local community activist from Flint, Arthur Woodson, although Brown did not name him.

Woodson did a Facebook Live video critical of an outsider trying to get involved in Flint politics. Woodson has endorsed AC Dumas in next month's election for the vacant 3rd Ward Council seat.

Brown has offered support for Beverly Biggs Leevy. She's a convicted felon after a fraud several years ago over buying food stamps from poor Flint residents to be used to buy food for restaurant use. Her daughter caused a city council meeting to be cancelled last fall after she pulled a gun on family members of late Councilman Quincy Murphy's after they stormed the council chambers, yelling to get Biggs Leevy and others on council.

Multiple police officers subsequently shut down the meeting.

Dumas has been a local Saturday morning radio show host on WFLT 1420 AM. He's also the current Vice President of the Flint chapter of the NAACP and a former President.

Biggs Leevy was involved in recalls against Murphy and one that resulted in the removal of former 9th Ward Councilwoman Eva Worthing who stepped down rather than face a recall election. She has also been involved in unsuccessful recall attempts against Dr. Lewis.
